Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) is the biggest company for railway transportation in Germany and aims at becoming the worldwide leading mobility and logistics provider. DB Netz AG, as the rail infrastructure company of the Deutsche Bahn AG, is responsible for the approximately 33.000 km long rail network. This positions us as the peak of the European Rail Infrastructure companies. As an innovative and future-oriented company, we create the conditions for a safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable mobility. For this reason we are responsible for a modern rail network in Germany.

Currently DB Netz is working on a modular and clearly specified architecture for signaling systems to enable seamless exchange of components in case of maintenance without having to worry about vendor-locks. HASELNUSS is using this design as base for further work.

DB Netz AG is also involved in other research projects, like Horizon 2020 CIPSEC, Shift2Rail, EULYNX or the national project CYSIS.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT is the leading expert within the field of IT security in Germany and Europe and has a long experience in development and promotion of security technologies and integration of security technologies into already established applications to make them resilient to malicious attacks and facilitate trust. Over 180 highly qualified employees cover all areas of IT security ranging from basic applied research and development of prototypes to product testing and customization as well as implementation of security concepts and solutions, tailored to the customer's needs. Fraunhofer SIT is active in projects for companies from all kinds of industries. Numerous successful projects are the resounding proof for trustful and reliable cooperation.

The institute is an active member of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) for more than 7 years participating in the Working Groups Embedded Systems, Infrastructures, TPM Software Stack, and TPM and Platforms. SIT actively contributes to enhancing the security level with the help of hardware-based trust anchors (TPM 2.0), for example, in projects SURF and IUNO in the area of Industrial Internet or in the project DELTA in the area of E-Mobility. With the “Time-based Unidirectional Attestation” the institute provided an IETF standard that allows monitoring and auditing of the system integrity status.

SYSGO is the leading developer and provider of real-time operating systems for safety-critical embedded systems in Europe. Our software platform PikeOS, a real-time operating system with hypervisor functionality, enables the safe execution of critical and non-critical applications on the same hardware, thus reducing space requirements, hardware costs, and energy consumption.

PikeOS has been designed from the ground up for mission-critical projects with certification requirements. PikeOS is certifiable according to various safety and security standards such as DO-178B / C, IEC 61508, EN 50128, ISO 26262 or IEC 15408 (Common Criteria). ELinOS is SYSGO's "industrial Linux" - designed to easily implement "out-of-the-box" software projects. ELinOS is a managed Linux distribution based on Linux kernel version 4.1 with long-term support and is 100% compatible with PikeOS.

80% of SYSGO engineers have extensive experience with certification projects that support our customers throughout the certification process. These customers are among the leading players in aerospace & defense, railways, automotive and industrial automation. As an independent company within the Thales Group, SYSGO employs around 125 people in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic. SYSGO is certified according to ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO / IEC 27001: 2013.

At TU Darmstadt, HASELNUSS is handled by the "Security Engineering Group" and the "Dependable, Embedded Systems and Software Group".

The Security Engineering Group, which is headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Katzenbeisser, aims to bridge the gap between cryptography and formal methods by exploring theoretically sound methods for designing and analyzing safe systems. Thematic priorities include the security of critical infrastructures among others. The group is involved in the development of a German standard for the creation of IT security in railway systems, which regulates risk analysis procedures in railway applications and IT security for safety. Currently, the pre-standard status of VDE V 0831-104 has been achieved and initial trials are taking place.

The Dependable, Embedded Systems and Software (DEEDS) Group is headed by Prof. Dr. Neeraj Suri. Their research focuses on the trustworthiness and delivery of reliable and secure distributed systems and software. The focus is on the design and analysis of distributed and networked systems as well as the evaluation of system properties (quantification of trust, validation and verification).

Both groups have experience with EC, DFG, LOEWE and BMBF projects, as well as projects promoted by the industry.
